Parent Information Evenings – Programs of Choice

As you start to consider your child’s interests and options for high school, we want to make you aware that all eight of our high schools offer Programs of Choice for secondary students – including career education, enrichment options, and sports academies.

The programs are designed to give students the opportunity to excel in a specific area of interest while fulfilling their academic requirements. Many are offered in partnership with higher education institutions or industry. Please see the attached flyer. Additional information is available on the Burnaby School District’s website: www.burnabyschools.caStudents in grade 7 are invited – along with their families – to attend a secondary open house and Career Education information session where they can learn more about the high school as well as Programs of Choice.

Students who will be in Grades 8-12 in the 2020-21 school year can apply for Programs of Choice and, if necessary, cross-district transfers during the month of February.

Please note that all grade seven students are required to complete the course selection information for their catchment schools. At Taylor Park, we will be starting course selection for Byrne Creek later in January. Information on applying for high schools not in your catchment is available on the district’s website. In accordance with district policy, we will automatically pre-enroll fully registered grade seven students living with their families in Burnaby according to the address on file and the corresponding high school catchment.

Parents should apply in February for elementary and secondary Programs of Choice, and cross-district transfers. Cross-district transfer applications are required if a student is planning to attend a school other than their home or catchment school. Click here for forms and to learn more about registration. If you are wishing to submit a cross district application, they will be accepted at the Taylor Park office starting February 3rd and need to be completed, signed by the parent, brought to the office and signed by our Taylor Park principal before they can be considered. Once we have received a cross district application, our secretaries will pass it on to the requested school and the student will then be considered based on district criteria. If you are moving out of the district or applying for a private school we would like to be aware of this and help out with the required documentation. Decisions on staffing and course offerings are made in the Spring so it is important that this be completed. High schools also offer articulation days, usually in June, where grade seven students visit the school and we want to make this available for all our grade seven students, regardless of which school they will be attending in September 2020.
